The Story of Why:In 2008 I quit college & moved to S.Sudan to help raise children who'd been orphaned. You can read my blogs about those experiences here
A decade later, most of those children have "aged out" of the orphanage (meaning they have surpassed the age at which they can live at the orphanage to receive care). Jan 2019 I completed 40hrs Foster Parent Training in which I was educated about the exceptional challenges that orphans face as young adults. Youth who have 'Aged Out' of social service assistance programs, who do not have a home base of support in their young adulthood are more likely to remain in the cycle of generational poverty, develop substance abuse, become trafficking victims, and commit suicide or die prematurely. After my visit to see the 'kids' in July 2019, my lessons & visions came full circle. I realized my work as a 'mother' to the ones I'd helped raise early on, is not done. My mission now is to help youth who are out on their own, navigating the tough waters of adulthood without a support system to fall back on- to be able to start businesses of their own so they can provide for themselves and write new stories of hope and potential for their bloodlines. Redemption Light International provides both funding & training to help our youth start & sustain successful businesses. Our aim is to break the cycle & set these young adults up with a path to success that connects them with the support they need for long term evolution & stability, changing the trajectory for the families they will build. I think of all the times that I as an adult have needed the safe haven of my parents home to fall back on during hard seasons. It is my duty & honor to continue serving & uplifting these beautiful souls who are worth it all. Maaaany beautiful projects & trips are on the horizon :) |
